Are You Being Pharmed?

I have had some almost disastrous encounters with hackers or people posing as a friend of mine. One example was a “friend” (who had never messaged me, sending me an offer in which they won a few thousand dollars for just ….)

More recently I received a note, “Here is a video.. I think I saw you in it.” That one got me, because of course I wanted to know who had a video of me beside my brother, sisters, or girlfriends. The last one was a shocker! I got out of the link as quickly as I could!

We have to be careful when we do anything allowing anyone (that we are not absolutely certain of) to have access to our computer!! One of our apps or even our computer could be controlled by one application uploaded, even as a message). When we have to log in to a page we use often and usually don’t have to log into everyday, something is wrong. I have had someone posing as a friend of mine, (their Facebook page had been hijacked) and typed in, “Hello. You have just been paid several thousand dollars because a woman contacted me and told me some way to get the money.”

I had not talked to this person before on Messenger, so I thought it odd. I told them I was not interested. But they kept going on and on, “You mean you don’t want to win $2000?” I blocked them.

By changing your password for Facebook, you cut them out of your Facebook control. One time I logged on to Amazon to report a problem with my new Kindle. They referred me to a number which I called. Thinking they were from Amazon, I questioned them, then gave them access to my computer! The truth came out when they told me they couldn’t help me. They would have to refer me to some other recognized name service. I checked for changes in the computer on the apps page to see what they had downloaded to my computer. I found their address and erased it immediately! I caught them before they caught me!

Pharming also involves uploading a Trojan Horse to a website who thinks they are connecting to another website. Did you know that a professional business page or major company site can be pharmed (hijacked) or your computer can be phished?

  1. Yes. Unfortunately I get these phishing messages every day. Especially ones claiming to be from UPS or other package delivery sites, people claiming to be friends or relatives with photos or videos I should see, emails claiming to show pictures of friends or relatives who have just died, claiming my email is about to be cut off, and on and on. I am so sick of it. I report them as phishing every time and the next day they just change their email address a bit and send again.

    1. Thankfully I haven’t had some of those. The latest is a notification that I had won a Tablet of some kind. After filling in my name and address, I saw a place for my credit card number to pay $9.75. I realized then there was something not right. I blocked my card and erased all the information before I submitted it. They claimed to be Amazon!

  3. Yes. The package delivery happens to me often. The saddest one for me is Facebook because I receive ‘friend’ requests from relatives and close friends who have died. I can always check with ones who are alive. At least with websites you can see the url. If it’s http: you know it’s fake if that ‘s’ isn’t there but if it is there, just be careful.
