My family was once in need for a year or so. My sister and I wore hand-me-downs while we were in school. Daddy lost a job and had to work two part-time jobs to support us. We never went lacking for food, but let’s just say that eating out was an uncommon treat.

I know the difference that help can make when you are a growing kid with clothes that do not grow with you! Most of the other kids in school were dressed in popular styles. Although my sister and I were sometimes wearing fashions that were two or three years outdated, we were comfortable and always looked nice. I know that is not really important, but often other kids judge you by your clothes.

I also clear out my closet each season, of the clothes that aren’t quite up to par in condition, size, color, or position of favor. Needless to say, I donate a lot of things to a local thrift store that helps homeless people who are burned out of their homes or are unable to buy brand new clothes.

This particular one has a Read and Feed bus that feeds kids during the summer and teaches them how to read. These are such loving services for the kids left at home while schools are out and parents are working.

So during these times, when there are so many more homeless people, than I can remember there ever being, please consider at least nodding and acknowledging those who are asking for help, if you have nothing to give them. I know, I was afraid to give eye contact while at a stop light for fear someone would approach me asking for money. I don’t keep money in my purse.

But I try to keep a bag of canned goods, heavy blankets, I don’t need anymore, or just a tarp or plastic to protect them from the rain. Anything is appreciated, and much is needed.

Try to put yourself in the shoes of the other person. When I was growing up it seemed the only ones wanting money were people who wanted to buy alcohol or drugs. That is far from the truth now. So many are homeless, living in their cars, or in dire need of help.

Please donate. Donate to whatever causes speak to you. I have heard some people say, “Why donate to that cause?”

Actually, I like to think that if people donate to some cause, it is better than not donating to any cause. A little bit is better than no bit. Don’t judge others for what causes they feel called to donate to. We are all called to donate to different causes. There is great need in so many causes right now. Be a part of the solution, not the problem.
