A Funny Thing Happened

The other day I was riding the grocery store scooter across the end of one aisle. Another woman on a scooter was making a wide turn in my direction, after coming out of the next aisle over. She accidentally knocked something off of a display that fell to the floor unbroken. About four other customers turned to look at who ran into the display.

As the other woman felt the gaze of everyone go to her, she looked at me and with a mischievous twinkle in her eye pointed at me and said, “She did it.”

At first I looked surprised, then I began to laugh because I saw what she was doing. There was no malice in her accusation and the bystanders were not upset. Everyone nearby started laughing. We grinned broadly at each other, as if we had coordinated something funny to make people laugh.

It felt good to inadvertently be involved in a mischievous and humorous incident which brought a little stress relief for those present.

Another incident of a slightly different nature occurred more recently. Often I use a scooter at he grocery store. I was on the paper aisle and wanted to get the large package of toilet paper down from the top of the top shelf. I used my brain and decided to use my cane to pull the package to the edge and make it fall. When I did it landed right in my hands. A man at the other end of the aisle saw the incident, laughed and applauded, while saying, “Good job!”

I laughed and felt good that I inadvertently made someone laugh.

Two days in a row, I went to the local grocery store. The first day, I met an elderly couple at the top of an aisle. I spoke to the wife and we started talking about how fun it is to meet people in this particular grocery store. Every time I go there, someone smiles back at me or we share a laugh bout something. Her husband was in the way as she turned to go further up the aisle. She made a teasing remark about him being in the way. I told her, “If you want me to, I could offer my cane to get him moving.” They both laughed out loud!

You may find situations like this that are somewhat silly but if they can cause others to share a laugh and brighten someone’s shopping trip or even their day, what is the harm? It helps to be aware of where you are, who you are near, and what feels like a situation that may spread some fun and levity to someone’s day.

  1. Cute. LOL
When I was in the hospital recently, they were doing tests on several of us in the same huge room. One of the workers slid across the vinyl seat of a small chair, and you can imagine the sound it made. I said, “That wasn’t me.” And everyone laughed. It’s great to make people laugh.
