Don’t Believe Everything You Hear

When my real estate agent was showing a nice condominium to me in 2013, I fell in love with the way it was laid out and just knew it was where my life would be good. I loved the calm colors, carpeted floors, a second bedroom, and bathroom for guests. The neighbors were friendly too.

On the tour of the condo, the agent led me into the master bathroom, where we both noticed that only the left light in both of the “over the sink ” lights was working. I think I remember hearing the real estate agent telling me there may be an electrical problem with them, and I might need to get an electrician to fix them if I bought the condo.

Well, those plans were never carried out. I had enough light over the sink by the toilet with one light and the other sink, which I rarely used. So why worry? I didn’t have the money to hire an electrician anyway.

Ten years later, my housekeeper, S. was helping me straighten up and clean up after Thanksgiving. She had been cleaning in the bathroom and noticed now that only one bulb was working of the four over the two sinks. Since she was going to the grocery store for me, she asked me to put bulbs on the list, which I did. I thought to myself, well, we could always keep a supply of bulbs, just in case.

S. went to the grocery store and picked up two-two packs of bulbs. On her return, S. screwed the bulbs into the working and (assumed to be) non-working fixtures while I was in another room. I was totally surprised when I walked into my bathroom and found that all of the four bulbs were actually working! The bathroom was brighter than I had ever seen since that first “showing” by the real estate agent ten years ago. I had assumed that the electrical part of the lights would be beyond what I could pay, so I just stuck with what I had. I could have afforded four bulbs ten years ago, but I was led to believe two of the fixtures were not working but never verified the real estate agent’s words that there was something wrong with the fixtures.

So, to make a point, don’t assume anything is broken until you or someone else tries to fix it.
