A Modern Psalm

By Melodie E. Estes

You are the Great, Ancient Sequoyah Tree.
Impervious, immortal, immovable.
Insects of human frailties can not touch You.
You weather storms; massive, powerful, ancient.

You shelter me with your love.
You give of your strength to me.
You give of your ageless wisdom to me.
You give of yourself to me.

I am protected by the vastness of your limbs,
Secure against the harsh sun’s heat.
Bolstered against the storms of life,
By the twining of my roots with yours.

You remind me of your love.
You nurture me through my prayers and worship.
You draw me to you and comfort me.
I am your seedling; thankful for your tender care.

No matter how much I look, I can’t see all of you.
No matter how long my limbs, I can’t reach around you.
No matter how hard I try I can’t reach your branches.
You gave me my life by reaching down to me.

I stand safely beneath your protection and love for me.                                                            I know you are here with me every day: Helping, loving, protecting, and teaching me.
You show me the ways of love, fellowship, and kindness.

The joy of living and experiencing the challenges of life,
The beauty of the morning and evening skies bring me joy.
Knowing You are here with me, helping and guiding me,
Gives me peace of mind and a joy like no other.

You created this world for us to learn how to live.
You gave us lives with challenges and experiences,
Activities to help us learn who we are and how to love.
These all teach us who You are and how much You love us.

Thank You, Great Sequoyah, for being our creator.
You are our heavenly Father, Helper, Savior, and God.
Thank you for the beauty of this earth and its inhabitants.
Thank you for watching over us and helping us learn.
