Elowen, My New Granddaughter

Sweet baby girl! My first granddaughter and third grandchild!

Dear Elowen,

(Elowen is now seven months old.) I am a bit late on your welcome letter. But I am so happy you are here with us now. I was so excited that your mommy and daddy had a little girl! You are just beautiful!

But now that you are born I can’t come see you because of a bad virus that people can get. I will not see you until I know I do not have that virus and I am safe enough to hold you and see you and your brothers, and hug Mommy and Daddy too.

When you were born I was so drawn to you, just as I was with your brothers but in a different way. First there was the name your parents chose for you. Elowen, means elm tree in the Celtic language. I have always loved trees. Trees have been around for centuries and some literally have lived longer than one or two centuries. I wish you longevity and good health. Secondly you are my first granddaughter. Your mother told me they liked the name also because the first two letters are the same first two letters of my name: Elaine.

Your mother and father are both very intelligent and your brothers are definitely smart kids. So you are bound to be another intelligent person. In the mean time it will be fun to watch you grow up, learn, interact with your brothers and mommy and daddy. But as with your brothers, I have had to watch you long distance.

Your mother is so sweet to send me pictures of you often and once a week we all get together on Facechat. This let’s me see you and watch your brothers play, talk and show me their toys.

Your brothers are absolutely crazy about you. Leo keeps patting you and hugging you. Big brothers can be pesty sometimes but they will always be there for you and help you learn things other kids without older brothers don’t often learn. You are one lucky girl!

You also have your grandmothers who both adore you. Your mother’s mother watched over your brothers while your mother and daddy were helping to bring you into the world. I will have to wait until later to enjoy seeing you and holding you personally. But we all love you so much.

Your mother is such a great example of a wise, intelligent, loving woman. She went to college with your daddy and they both have had a good education. So listen to them when you are older. Your mother has always been like a daughter to me. I love her so much and am so proud and thankful for her marrying your daddy, my son. She treats me like another mother.

I love you sweet one. I can’t wait to watch you and your brothers grow up. I can’t wait to see what you do with your life and how you find happiness, your education, calling in life and your love. Love is so important, You learn about it first from your parents, from your relatives and your brothers. Then you learn about it from friends at school, and later girlfriends and boyfriends. They each have talents you can decide on which you want to develop or focus on. I look forward to that journey.

I love you, Sweetheart. You are such a joy already. If it is possible I believe you will be a joy to your mother and daddy later even more than you are now as they watch you grow up and watch who you become. There is so much love swirling around you from others.

But one very important love is the love you learn to give yourself. Know that you are precious to your mommy, daddy, brothers and relatives. But you need to value and love yourself too. As you grow up your personality will evolve and change. Good, bad, challenging, scary, happy and sad things will happen. But you will be surrounded by your family’s love. Each experience can be used as a teaching to help give you wisdom. I had to learn that myself.

Oodles and oodles of love and hugs to you!

    1. Thank you, Johanna. I did get to see her in August at a park. But otherwise I see her on Facechat for now. I hope someday I will get to see her in person! This Covid is keeping me at home except vital outings. I miss my family.

    1. Thank you my dear friend. I have this feeling she is going to be an amazing woman some day. Her mother and father are pretty amazing in themselves and she has two older brothers to play with and learn about living with people. I love her and the boys so much!

  1. Congratulations on your beautiful granddaughter Elaine and I love her name. Reminded me of Elohim, a word which Sir Walter Scott used to describe his ‘servant boy’, which I think is another name God. (When he dictated an Epithalamium to me many years ago…long story! Enjoy your lovely granddaughter when you can and its wonderful we have the technology to face time our families in the meantime! With warmest greetings!

    1. Thank you, Jane! The chose her name partly because it began with the same first two letters that my name begins with. She is going to be an amazing woman someday. Her mother has her doctorate; her daddy has his Masters and is a data base analyst for the state. She has two brothers to teach her things and watch over her.
